PENGARUH PENYERAPAN AIR TERHADAP KEKUATAN TARIK DAN KETANGGUHAN RETAK PADA KOMPOSIT SERAT FIBER DENGAN PERENDAMAN STEADY
Composites have been widely used in the aircraft and marine industry. In operation
composites are often exposed to water, causing degradation of its mechanical properties. This
research purpose is to determine the effect of water on the tensile strength and fracture toughness
of the composite fiberglass soaked using the media and different time. The specimens were stored
using two types of immersion is distilled water and salt solution with a salt content of 3.5% and
varying the time of immersion is 0, 7, 15 and 30 days at 50 ° C. Results showed that the longer the
immersion time resulting in the water absorption of the composite becomes larger. Composites
immersed in distilled water has a water absorption rate greater than that which is soaked with a
saline solution. The longer soaking also resulted in the tensile strength of the composite becomes
decreased. Soaking also causes a decrease in fracture toughness of the composite in early
immersion. Thenit increases into the soaking time of 15 days and 30 days, but the value is still
lower compared to the dry conditions
